Dubrovnik and islands

We can get cheap flights to Dubrovnik but not Split, and it seems that it is only from Split that you can really get to Brac or Korcula. I haven%26#39;t been to Brac for 20 years but loved it back then.

I want to take my partner to Croatia for 2 weeks - drive about a bit, go for walks, go to the beach, but ultimately have a base in one place. Brac seemed like a good bet but we are in Scotland and with a direct flight from Edinburgh to Dubrovnik this seems the best option. Can anyone give me an idea of where we could go or should we really be looking to get a flight to Split?

Not quite true, Korcula is closer to Dubrovnik.

I would suggest more than one base. Start in Dubrovnik, stay a couple nights. From there you can possibly ferry or definitely take a bus to Korcula (only 3 hours, nice scenery). Then after some itme on Korcula, take the ferry to Split, then from Split take the ferry to Brac.

Finally, take a bus from Split back to Dubrovnik the day before your flight out. Easy enough, right?

I would spend the most time on Korcula (since it is one of my favorite places) and Brac (since it is a special place to you), with just a couple nights in Dubrovnik (plus your last night) and maybe one or two in Split to break up the travel.

You don%26#39;t need a car the whole time, you could just rent one while on the islands for exploring and easily getting to the best beaches.

If you keep the car the whole time, drive to Korcula from Dbv, then drive along the mainland to Makarska and take the ferry to Brac, returning the same way.

Thanks - that%26#39;s really helpful. How long would it take to get from Dubrovnik to Makarska? If we just drove from Dubrovnik to Makarska - got the ferry to Brac - how long would that take?

I know in myself that I don%26#39;t want to do loads of travel and much prefer it if I am staying in one place the whole holiday.

Thanks again.

Also ... I%26#39;m interested to know why you love Korcula so much? Does it have nice beaches but also small interesting towns/ villages? :-)

Try viamichelin for driving times (it is probably less than 3 hours, as I know it is about 4 to Split) and the jadrolinija website for ferry info (though those should be frequent): Makarska to Sumartin.

Korcula town itself is absolutely stunning. Nearby Lumbarda has some very nice ancient buildings, surrounded by vineyards. There is a string of very tiny historic towns across the spine of the island toward Vela Luka. It is mostly vineyards across the island, amazing views everywhere. There are some great beaches, the best require a bit of trekking once you park.

Croatia-beaches is a useful site too.

Here is a great resource for researching Brac:

Brac was not as exceptional to me, but you have fond memories and that is enough. It also has some pretty small towns, great views, the famous Zlatni Rat beach, and I%26#39;m sure some small secluded beaches. And, to recommend it most of all, Brac would be an excellent base with its proximity to the mainland, so with a car you could do some great exploring.

From Korcula, with a car you could explore the Peljesac peninsula, and depending on how much driving you want to do, maybe even further afield into Bosnia (with permission from rental car company).

Good Luck!
