Planning a group trip - many questions

Hi all,

I am trying to plan a trip for between 3-15 women (price and dates will play a factor in how many will actually come) for our collective 30th birthday.

We are looking at an early October time frame, and I noticed that October 8 is Independence Day - what kind of special celebrations go on around this time? Is there anything a tourist should worry about on this holiday (in Budapest, the far right wing skinheads take advantage of the holiday to harass tourists, gypsies and other foreigners)

We want to rent a flat (or many, depending on numbers), does anyone have recommendations for a landlord or rental agency?

And, then, any comments/corrections/suggestions on my so-far vague itinerary would be welcome (which I put together thanks to this forum and In Your Pocket):

1 Day for Upper Town, 1 Day for Dolac Market, Jelacic Sq and maybe the zoo, a day trip to Varazdin, one day for Mirogoj Cemetery. The idea would be that we could be sort of leisurely tourists and enjoy food, wine and cafes throughout. We%26#39;d also like to go out dancing, it seems like Boogaloo, Saloon and the Best are all good options.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi.

October 8 is nothing to worry about... I didn%26#39;t even know it is an Independence day (and I%26#39;m guessing most people here don%26#39;t know it too). There aren%26#39;t any special celebrations, some shops will be closed and that%26#39;s all.

I don%26#39;t have any recommendations about renting a flat. I have heard of Evistas, http://www.evistas.hr , but I don%26#39;t know anything about them. Their website is bad, but you can send them an e-mail and find out if you%26#39;d be interested in what they have to offer.

Now, about your itinerary, from a Zagreb resident%26#39;s point of view, I%26#39;ll say this.

1 day for Dolac Market and Jelacic Sq is definitely too much. If you add the Zoo to your itinerary for that day, it%26#39;ll probably be OK, but you can see Dolac and Jelacic in an hour (they%26#39;re next to each other and not really big).

1 day for Upper Town is OK, I guess.

1 day for Mirogoj... now, it does seem like a little too much time for me, but I agree, there is a lot to see in Mirogo. If you%26#39;re leisurely, it should fine, though.

1 day for Varazdin is fine, and if you%26#39;re looking for additional day trips, may I suggest Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia? It%26#39;s less than 100mi from Zagreb and a beautiful little city.

Also, you must include Lower Town in your sightseeing (Marshall Tito Sq, Zrinjevac, Preradovic Sq with its Orthodox Church...). It can easily take a day or at least one afternoon.

About dancing, I%26#39;m afraid I don%26#39;t know much about that. I%26#39;ve heard of all of these clubs, but I%26#39;ve never been there. They seem to be among the better ones in Zagreb. Now, I must warn you: see what music will they play the day you plan on visiting any of the clubs in Zagreb. If they play turbo-folk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbo-folk) and especially if it%26#39;s not a big night club you go into, there is some (very slight) chance you find yourself in the middle of a fight of some kind. I can%26#39;t explain it, but this kind of music seems to have always been connected with criminals and organized crime.

If you have any further questions, please, ask... you can also PM me for any further explanations.

Have lots of fun!

Wow, thanks!

I wondered if there was a %26quot;Lower Town%26quot; (since there is an Upper Town) that I just was missing. Perhaps we will skip the Zoo or plan for a shorter cemetary visit to fit that in.
