Prague to Croatia to Budapest

We are flying into Prague and out of Budapest and would like to visit Croatia in between. We have a total of 3 weeks and plan for 10 days in Croatia. Any suggestions for the best way to travel? Train, car, cheap flights? Ideally, we would like to go to Dubrovnik and the southern Dalmation Coast, also possibly to Plitvice. Thanks!

If you are looking to hit all those place, it might be smart if you are mobile, so I would suggest renting a car (combining train, which doesnt go to dubrovnik, with bus can be hectic), using Zagreb as your base. That way, you can it Plitvice around a 2-3hr drive from ZG on the way to Dalmatia) before you hit the sea. My experience with renting cars from ZG is that National (with an offices at the airport and in the Westin in town) is the cheapest.

I also remember hearing about a low cost carrier that flies between Budapest and Split, but I couldnt tell you the name. That might be something worth researching and incorporating into your trip.

If there are several of you a car might be cheaper. You are looking at quite a lot of driving if you go all the way to Dubrovnik so probably need several of you to cover the driving. The cheap flights someone mentioned would be with Wizz Air I think.

If they have 10 days and choose their destinations right, they wont be on the road for longer than 4hrs on any leg of the trip. For example, one can go zg-plitvice (about 3hrs), plitvice-makarska (about 3.5hrs), makarska-dubrovnik (3.5-4hrs), dubrovnik-split (4hrs), split-zg (3.5hrs). while on one of those legs, if one includes a restarant stop for food - I recommend %26quot;Kapitanova Kuca%26quot; in Mali Ston between Makarska and Dubrovnik (excellent seafood!), %26quot;Marina%26quot; in Tucepi close to Makarska(again excellent seafood!) or %26quot;Hotel Sveti Mihovil%26quot; in Trilj between Split and Makarska (gotta try the grill frogs, the local specialty!) - the drive wouldnt seem even that long. But again, it all depends on timing and where they want to go (mentioned were Dubrovnik, southern Dalmatian coast and Plitvice). I think it can be done painlessly if planned right. Thank god for the new highway.

And with regard to the mnonstop Split-Budapest flight, German Wings (www.germanwings.com) does that particular route.
