Makarska coast - which resort?

Helped needed please. Which is the best resort on the Makarska coast? Have been looking at Tucepi or Brela and would welcome any comments or thoughts. We are planning to go early June for 10 days and will have a car for getting out and about. We enjoy walking and sightseeing, not bothered about lying on the beach all day. Looking for somewhere not too busy and with a good choice of restaurants in the evening. Have been to Rovinj and Cavtat, loved both.

|||

Not sure you are going to find a place not too busy along the Makarska Riviera. I would suggest the Hotel Alga in Tucepi. I have stayed there and found it quite adequate, except its a very very busy area. If you want a little more quiet, then maybe Brela would be better for you?

|||

june is quite

I suggest you

Np Krka

antic Salona

Split - Make diokletian palace walking tour

Hvar

|||

Hi Yorkie,

I%26#39;ve actually been to both. Admittedly was Sept when we visited but a little more variety I would say Tucepi than Brela. Don%26#39;t get me wrong wrong Brela is lovely but its very very small. So guess its just a case of what your looking for, but for a bigger selection of resturants etc I%26#39;d recommend Tucepi there arent that many bars or rests in Brela.

A Rough Steer required

Hello,

Strongly considering visiting Croatia this summer. Was in Dubrovnik for a week in 2005 and loved it. This time I want to see some of the islands as well.

If anyone could have a stab at answering the following questions, I would be much obliged and would be more than happy to help them if with any experience I have of travelling in different countries that may be of interest.

1. One of the reasons I have chosen Croatia is that I thought Dubrovnik was a nice mix. Chilled and historic but with plenty of nightlife too. What islands would best match this description?

2. How long does it take on a ferry/ or to drive from Dubrovnik to Hvar or where one could take a ferry to Hvar or a nearby island worth visiting?

3. I%26#39;ll be travelling with a male companion and we a re both single so, like I said, a bit of nightlife and the opportunity to meet people- backpackers and the like- is important to us. Are the islands okay for this or is it more of a couples / family destination?

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Barry

|||

Think Hvar town on Hvar Island is the match – historical, nightlife, lots of daily escape options. You can also make a trip to Split from there (fast catamaran connection).

Ferry ride from Dubrovnik to Hvar is about 7 hours (with a stopover in Korcula). Mind that ferry port on Hvar island is the town of Stari Grad – from there to Hvar town either bus or taxi.

Perhaps you can have a stopover in Korcula for a night, from there to Hvar you can take fast catamarans - they sail only in high season I think, but the good thing is they go straight Korcula to Hvar town (not to Stari Grad like ferries).

|||

You can drive from Dubrovnik to Drvenik (about 2 hours max) and take a ferry to Sucuraj on Hvar island. 80 kn long scenic and dramatic road leads to Hvar. You will meet people in Hvar. Don%26#39;t worry...

|||

Thanks for that.

One more thing, Im thinking the first couple of weeks in June. Will the season be going at that stage or quiet?

|||

The real high season starts sometime mid June.

|||

Thanks again.

I risk repeating myself here but sometimes one persons idea of nightlife and someone elses is different.

By nightlife, I mean bars, nightclubs, singles etc. I know its not going to be crazy but out door plazas full of couples etc drinking coffee and smoking is not my idea of nightlife!

Which is it guys? Thanks.

|||

Hvar is rather cosmopolitan little town during summers with a great vibe. You%26#39;ll find a lot of singles and booze – but it aint Temple Bar exactly. Bars are more cocktail bar types.

Summer Holiday

I am thinking of a summer holiday to croatia in august with small group of friends aged 26-27. Which areas are best for beaches and some good nightlife?

|||

I suggest route - Split - Hvar - Dubrovnik

|||

Fly into Split and get out to the islands of Hvar or Brac.

Quiet place around Split - on an island?

Hi,

I am looking for some advice to find a quiet place somewhere around Split. Would be nice on one of the nearby islands.

Looking for a place without the mass tourism, close to a nice beach, something nice for a family with two kids.

We had stayed two years ago in a wonderful little village called Mlini- close to Dubrovnik, but now would like to explore Central Dalmatia.

Any ideas? Thanks!

|||

Hi,

I like a little village Splitska /Hvar/, or Pucisca or Sutivan /Brac/, maybe Stomorska /Solta/.... Mali and Veli Drvenik /in front of Trogir........

but for family with two kids - I%26#39;d choose Rab - google it and you%26#39;ll see.......

bye

jeanne

|||

How about the island of Vis?

|||

on season or out season

|||

Check out Supetar/Brac. You can get there via ferry from Split. Beaches are stone but very nice. Ferry means you can go to Split for the day if the kids get bored.

|||

I wouldn%26#39;t choose Supetar; it is a main %26quot;harbour%26quot; on Brac, so there are always lot%26#39;s of people....

if you choose town of Vis, try to find the accommodation close to Ceska Vila...

bye

jeanne

|||

Many places on the islands but Solta or Vis would be my choices!

|||

Dear all,

many thanks for all your good advice! I had now googled Solta and Stomorska and it sounds really great.

there is just one thing: on some websides they refer to Stomorska, as a crowded disco-paradise of the island during the summer, is it true?

On the other hand, the other small towns, Maslinica etc sounds like very, very quiet..... Too quiet!!

How is your experience?

And if you had stayed at Stomorska, how is the beach?

Are there trips too to other island? And how is it possible to get around on the island?

Thanks!

|||

Stomorska is my favorite place at Dalmatian islands for weekends in the summer.Center of the village has a few lovely resturants and caffe bars with live music in the high season.There is no any disco now in the center that it was a few years ago.

Only disco is in village Staro Selo few kilometres away.

At another hand during the day village is really tranquile and relaxing.

Stomorska has a beautiful untouched beaches with cristal sea without mass toursim and there you will enjoy for sure.

You can looking for accommodation just a litlle outside the center of the village and then you will be few steps from the beaches.

Maslinica is really very, very calm place.

From island Solta there is no ferry line to other islands but there is daily excursions with private boats. All info about that you will get in tourst office.

1st trip to Croatia

Hi..

I am planning to go to Croatia this year for a summer holiday with my boyfriend but haven%26#39;t got a clue where to stay. Ideally we would like somewhere with a bit of nightlife and a plush hotel. Any suggestions??

Thanks

|||

Hello,

BOL /island of Brac/ is -definitely- a perfect place for you with the most beautiful beach, it is very %26quot;in%26quot;, /lot%26#39;s of VIPs go there/, great night life...

bye

jeanne

|||

Hvar is the place for you! Bol is a bit %26quot;out%26quot;... Also, some great chic hotels in Hvar - Adriana and Riva

|||

I think Bol or Hvar would be excellent choices!

|||

Hi Holly, don%26#39;t rule out Makarska, which looks like the French Riviera, without the high prices and crowds. It is a beautiful city and has some lovely hotels and apartments. I find the net is great for sourcing out the best places. Good luck!

Taxi fare from ferry terminal to Old Town

Hi there - can anyone tell us how much it will cost to take a taxi from the ferry terminal to Old Town? We will have babies and some luggage with us and therefore may not be able to cope with the bus. Can cabs go into the Old Town? If not, how do people with luggage get to apartments they%26#39;ve booked inside the Old Town?

Thanks for your help.

|||

cannot remember but around E12 ....its not that far and I think it is a set price plus luggage extra.

however where is your apartment as this can be another issue....We had to lug heavy cases 120 steps up to our place and it was a little bit of effort .

send me a message on TA messages if you want some tales on dubothernik and can link a map to your unit .

Public transport from Dubrovnik airport to Dubrovni old

Hi there

Just wondering, my hotel quoted 70 euro each way for my party of 3 adults and one child to go to our hotel in the old town area of Dubrovnik.

Can anybody help me in discovering other less expensive transport options?.

Croatia/Slovenia- 19 days

Very concerned re itinerary ( 19days) depending solely on public transport.We fly into Zagreb early March and fly out of Zagreb 27March.( tickets already purchased)

We hope to spend about 3/4 nights in Ljubljana,(Slovenia) highly recommended by others and the rest in Croatia.The problem is getting around during the Easter period (21March - 24March) and trying to get back to Zagreb the Tuesday after Easter Monday.

We are hoping not to have to back track all the way in Croatia going from and back to Zagreb.Is it better to go to Slovenia towards the end of the trip as I understand that there is a train direct to Zagreb.Will we have problem with lodging during Easter period if we do not make any bookings yet in Ljubljana? Will accommodation and living expenses be more costly in Slovenia as compared to Croatia.Hoping alco to include Plitvice Lakes ( 2 nights. Will the place be too cold ( lakes frozen?) in March.

All suggestions most welcomed.

|||

Have you considered Lake Bled?

Could easily catch a bus from Ljubljana as the journey is only 1hr 30 min. It is possible to visit Bled for the day but I would recommend an overnight stay if possible. Either two or three nights in Ljubljana and a night in Bled is about right.

Have a look at www.bled.si for further information.

ps - If you need further information about Bled let me know as I visited for a week last Summer.

|||

Thanks for the suggestion about Lake Bled - will certainly do it.

Can%26#39;t decide whether to go to Ljubljana from Zagreb or to leave trip to Ljubljana to the end of the trip after visiting Croatia so that it is easier to travel to Zagreb to catch the return flight.Will it be a problem getting lodging during the Easter weekend and getting public transport to Lake Bled too during that period?

|||

Hi Excited Australia,

According to my diary, Slovenia has a bank holiday on the 24 March 2008. The bus service usually runs on a reduced timetable during bank holidays. I would recommend reserving your hotel reservation during the Easter period. I was in Bled for a week last June and we stayed at the Hotel Pension Mayer which was very nice. I think this has to be the prettiest hotel in Bled. Will have to reserve in the Mayer as it is extremely popular.

Have a look at the reviews for further information. Good luck, enjoy your stay!!

|||

Thank you again for the information.As we will be depending solely on public transport it might be wiser to go to initially to Slovenia after 2 nights at Zagreb and then make our way down to Croatia.By the way is there a possibility of leaving from Lake Bled itself to overnight at the nearest interesting place in Croatia enroute to Dubrovnik depending solely on public transport?What about a stopover at Plitvice Lakes?

All advice welcomed.Thanks.

|||

I am not sure about the transport links but Plitvice Lakes is a very good option. I am sure this is located on the old main road from Zagreb to Split. Alternatively, you could consider Venice for one day as it is located close to the Slovenian boarder. Visiting Split and Dubrovnik will involve too much travelling for one night. Hope this helps, happy planning!!

|||

Have done the Italy.... boat to Croatia Split....Hvar.....Dubrov.....trogir....Rovinj... Ljubjlana bit all by bus. Can send a travel report if you send me an email address as is a large file.

Roscoe

|||

It looks logical to me to go: Zagreb-Ljubljana (Bled)-back to Croatia through Istria, towns Rovinj, Pula, Opatija/Rijeka.

Or you can avoid Istria and go straight to Rijeka (train from Ljubljana) and then from Rijeka to Plitvice by bus; then more toward south: Zadar, Sibenik, Split, Dubrovnik (all by buses).

You can include an island (Brac, Hvar) from Split – or even take a ferry via islands from Split to Dubrovnik – mind that this need some additional planning due to not so frequent ferry rides off season.

As for coming back from Dubrovnik to Zagreb, taking a bus would be a waste of time – check out Croatia Airlines, they offer cheap flight within Croatia, from Dub. to Zagreb as well. It should be affordable and fast (1 hour flight).

http://www.croatiaairlines.com/

|||

You have already received good replies, but I wanted to mention the Plitvice Lakes. We spent a week in Croatia last year, which wasn%26#39;t nearly enough time. We are going back in September, sailing down the coast to Dubrovnik, then hiring a car to make our way via the Lakes, to Zagreb. You must see the Lakes, as they are described as stunning. It would be ideal to stay for a night as there are 16 lakes in all. Check out the weather on Go Croatia. I doubt it will be warm. We found Croatia generally to be inexpensive, including accommodation. A 2 lt bottle of beer in a supermarket was $2.50. Food cheap as well. Good luck, and do some surfing.

|||

Thank you all of you for your wonderful responses and your time.At least I%26#39;m not as worried knowing the good options to consider.Should there be anymore tips from travellers I%26#39;d be glad to read about them.So far I haven%26#39;t made any bookings for lodging as I feel I am hoping to keep to a more flexible itinerary so that we can stay longer at a place we might happen to like.Incidentally I have not found many private and more affordable bed and breakfast sites on the internet for Croatia and Slovenia.

|||

Coastal Croatia and Plitvice Lakes surroundings offer pretty good choice of BnB options (though some, especially along the coast, are closed off season).

Check out this online booking site (it offers all kinds of accommodations and is reliable)

http://www.adriatica.net/home/home.htm

Be SURE the place you stay has heating.

Ferry to Bol / Brac / Korcula

Does the ferry to the islands e.g Bol / Brac / Korcula depart from Baska Voda or another resort in Makarska?

Thanks for your help %26amp; Happy New Year.

|||

You can get to the island of Brac from Makarska. The ferry will run from Makarska to Sumartin. Then if you wanted to get to Bol you would have to get across the island from Sumartin. To get to Korcula, you would take a ferry from Ploce to Trpanj, then get to Orebic and take a short ferry ride from there to Korcula.

|||

Thanks for the information.

|||

In the summer there should be a ferry from Drvenik (near Makarska) - Korcula and from Drvenik - Sućuraj (Hvar).

I love Drvenik as it has the above ferry connections and is more laid back them some of the bigger resorts.

|||

yes. there is also catamaran from bol to hvar... btw, if you are seeking pleasure and enrichment through the wonder of the unexplored visit easternmost tip of brac - www.peskafondo.net!

Anybody ever visit Kaprije island?

Hi Can anyone assist me? I am planning to travel at the end of May to Zadar area and was wondering if anyone has stayed on the Island of kaprije off Sibenik, is it very quiet? I am looking for a chilled out kind of place to relax for a week, could this island be it? or is it just too quite

|||

it is too quiet. Wonderful, authentic, quiet... but to quiet if you are looking for any action. Nearby Sibenik is not bad but that is Å ibenik and not Kaprije...

|||

Hi Morlaque , if you were looking for a nice chilled out place in the region of zadar that has nice cafes and restaurants good scenery and a nice atmosphere . Where would you go? or would you travel further south? Look forward to suggestions, many thanks.

Our trip to Croatia

I was in Croatia at the end of May and through June of last year. What an incredible place to vacation first of all! We used jaywaytravel.com for all of our plans. And thank god we did because had we of done this on our own it would have been a disaster.

Eastern Europe is obviously still a little under developed compared to other parts of Europe. We had wanted to start in Zagreb and work our way down. Come to find out the amount of time spent on buses would have been horrible. Jay was able to book all of our lodging, which we had plenty of options of high, medium and low pricing. In Dubrovnick we stayed at GLORIA%26#39;S place, and oh my god what a riot this woman is! Her daughter even made me coffee every morning. All of his recomendations were wonderful, and there was no pressure to do any of it. If we wanted to just take off on our own we could.

I have a business in San Diego and have already referred him some clients who have booked travel for this year. They can%26#39;t rave enough about how easy he makes the booking/travel process.

|||

Thanks for the recommendations. Would love to spend that much time in Croatia. Enjoyed your post.

Thinking of travelling to Croatia for a week commencing the 20th May, possibly Pula. Please could anyone advise what the weather and temperatures will possibly be please??

Thanx

You can get the weather for various lengths of forecast times (today, tomorrow, 10-days, etc.) at www.weather.com. Enter Dubrovnik Croatia

We were there about the same time this past May. The weather was extremely pleasant, other than a solid day of rain in Dubrovnik. I don%26#39;t think we even wore jackets in the evening, very pleasant. We were in Portoroz, Slovenia, then drove down the coast to Dubrovnik.

Day trips from Bol

Hi

We will be in Bol for 2 weeks mid June, can anyone advise on what day trips will be on offer?

|||

on coast you can visit

Split, make some tour in Split like Diokletian palace tour or split grande tour

also visit antic salona and Trogir, one days to Np Krka and maybe on river cetina

|||

I would say for sure that you should get to Hvar for a day trip or two. If you could get to Makarksa that would be good too.

suggestions for 3 days

Flying into Amsterdam then on to Dubrovnik for 3 nights, then split 1 night, then Zlarin 4 nights, then I%26#39;m not sure. Was thinking of renting a car and driving to Zagreb but I%26#39;m leaning more towards Trojir,Hvar area. Need 3 nights somewhere. What do you suggest? Need to fly to amsterdam after for our last 3 nights in Europe. Help!! We could fly out of Dubrovnik.

|||

If you have 3 nights in the area - stay in Trogir and visit Split, Krka National Park and even a day trip to Brac is possible.

|||

you must stay more time in Ssplit region..

see.. Np Krka, Antic salona, Blue cave

|||

Å¡ibenik,trogir,

|||

Renting a car is very good because you can visit more form our country.After Split and Trogir, go to visit Å¡ibenik, NP Krka, then Zadar and after that you can visit NP Plitvicka jezera. From there , Zagreb is only 1 or 1,5 hour by car and there is much more ,fun and shoping. And from there, you can go back to Amsterdam

|||

How about going to Korcula after being in Dubrovnik?

Itinerary input.

I%26#39;m spending 5 weeks in Europe and a portion of that will be in Croatia/Lubjlana. I%26#39;m flying into Dubrovnik in late May. Spend a few days in Dubrovnik. I then have 7 full days before leaving Lubjlana for Budapest. I plan on working my way up to one of the Islands via ferry from Dubrovnik, then on to Split, then to Lubjlana. Maybe I should go to Split, then one of the Islands? Which Island? Hvar, Korcula or Makarsa? Ideas anyone? Preferences? Should I forgoe One of the Islands or maybe skip Split and devote more time to 3 places instead of 4? I%26#39;m I asking too many questions in one post? Help!Thanks, luck all.

|||

2 days Dubrovnik then korcula. From Korcula catch a ferry/catamaran to Hvar. One night there. Go to Split and overnight there. After that go to Trogir and Zadar. Last day go to Np Plitvice and Ljubljana. All depends on the method of traveling, but this can be a starting point to research

|||

Dubrovnik - Hvar - Split - Plitvice lakes - Zagreb ..

|||

For better ferry options, I would go to Split, then go to Hvar or Brac from there.

Kayaking in Dubrovnik, please help

I am planning a trip with my girlfriend to Croatia in June and read somewhere in a book that Kayaking was popular in Dobrovnik. Can someone let me know if there is any more information on this, any websites? I have some experience but my girlfreind doesn%26#39;t.

Also, are there any other areas where kayaking would be an option since we haven%26#39;t decided for definite where we are going to be based yet.

Sorry if this questions has been asked before.

|||

Try this site for starts-

www.adriatic-sea-kayak.com/Daily%20Tours.htm

We have never done the kayaking, but have seen them and have always thought it would be a neat thing to do in Dubrovnik.

|||

Kayaking is great in Dubrovnik area and highly recommended! Other areas, if into kayaking would be on Rab and Pag islands - unique landscape, great sandy beaches, historic towns...

driving from dubrovnik to zagreb?? a few questions

Hello everyone,

Dubrovnik on July 5 and 6 is completely booked, I can%26#39;t find a room for my family of 4 (2 little boys and me and my husband)...I was considering taking our rental car and driving from Dubronvnik to Zagreb where we fly back to the united states on Tuesday the 8th.

Does anyone have any suggestions of where to stop and stay along the way? Is this a doable trip or am I crazy with two little kids?

Portlandlupe

Thank you soooo much for any replies and suggestions!

|||

Definitely Plitvice lakes, stay overnight in Slunj.

|||

I like the idea of Plitvice, but that might be a long day of driving. I would look into Zadar or something a little closer to half way to stop and stay at.

|||

No, it%26#39;s cetrainly doable, especially since now there is a highway all the way from Split to Zagreb. However, you could fly from Dubrovnik to Zagreb, the flight lasts only 45 min instead of driving for hours. If you decide to drive, count on going through a border crossing at Neum (Croatia is divided in two parts - between them is a couple of kilometers of Bosnia and Herzegovina), but there%26#39;ll probably not be any queues.

If you decide to stay somewhere along the way, you can always try, as people said, Zadar (or any place from Sibenik to Zadar, for that matter - for example, Vodice), although I must say I was never impressed by the Croatian sea - I have a feeling that when you%26#39;ve seen one Dalmatian town, you%26#39;ve seen them all. But that%26#39;s just me.

Anyway, to see what towns are near the highway or some other major road, see this interactive map: www.cromaps.com/vacmap/autokarta_hrvatska.htm

Have a nice trip!

|||

There are soo many great places to stop at! Makarska and the neighboring towns, Å ibenik area with Krka National park, Zadar area (town of Nin or Biograd!)and, of course Plitvice

Makarska and Brac

HI people!

Im going on holidays at the end of August to Croatia. we will be spending 1 week in hotel meteor in makarska before going to hotel elephusa in Brac (Bol) for 1 week.

Does anyone one have any advice for things to do, places to go or activities to do in either of these places? any help would be great!

thanks

|||

well, one is for sure: bol is to much crowded. visit www.peskafondo.net. - yours true way to enjoy the holiday in croatia.

|||

I think most of my time in Bol would be spent siting on Zlatni Rat beach soaking up the sun and swimming in the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic. Or you could take a class on windsurfing. That sure looked like a lot of fun!

|||

I in Makarska, go rafting or hiking to Biokovo. On Brac, numerous historic sites on the island. Great place for hiking but beware, August can be very hot! Museum at Skrip, churches and monastery Blaca, Dragon%26#39;s cave...

|||

yes for many people asked me where to go so i wrote top 10 places to go on brac! -%26gt; peskafondo.net/en/…

hope you%26#39;ll like it :)

|||

to barrymanilow: i don%26#39;t know whats so %26quot;chrystal%26quot; in 1km2 with over 3000-4000 (sometimes even more!) people in it? :-) the beach is really unique but (i%26#39;m from brac) it%26#39;s to popular, to crowded (peskafondo.net/images/…03_zlatni_rat.jpg)

it would be better to find your own (and belive me, there are many of them) lonely inlet/cove and then try to enjoy :-))

|||

I am currently looking at booking a week in mid June to either Makarska or Bol, I haven%26#39;t decided yet. Can someone tell me if it would be relatively quiet still then? Toni83 says Bol is too busy, but would this be refering to July and August or is June going to be very busy too?

|||

since i%26#39;m from sumartin easternmost tip of brac) i can tell you that the best time to visit makarska if you want relatively quiet place/accommodation/nights are april and may... june is season so it%26#39;s not that much crowded like august but its crowded if you want everything is peaceful. this reffers also for bol on brac. why don%26#39;t you try some other places that aren%26#39;t so popular but very - %26quot;uncrowded%26quot; in the season? and after that bol is just 25minutes of driveing from that part of brac if you like super night life. also there is direct car-ferry connection from sumartin to makarska...

krk great help split

stayed at malinska on krk last year but no flights to rijeka this year.would love to find similar close to split any suggestions please? thanks jill

|||

look at www.rijeka-airport.hr , I think there are flights to London all summer. But you can visit Istra (airport Pula- Medulin,Porec, Rovinj, Umag) it is very very beautiful like all our cost cities .

Airport is also in Zadar (thay have flight to London) there are Pakostan , Sukosan, Biograd na moru. Good luck .

|||

How about Trogir?

|||

Split area is also great! Islands like Brac and Solta are perfect for you.

|||

We used the Easyjet flight from Bristol to Rijeka last year too--didn%26#39;t last long did it!

So we are seizing the opportinity to take their new route to Split. I think Hvar is the nearest island among a range of choices there and it will be interesting to see another part of the lovely country of Croatia

Get a guide book and go coastal until Zadar.Dozens of places to stop at.

Than you can go on motorway and copuple hrs later stop at Plitvice.Before hitting Zagreb run through Karlovac.

|||

thank you kefa...

not sure the little guys can take such a long drive but a good suggestion!

|||

Croatia Airlines offer cheap flights within Croatia, can book them online. Just an option to avoid this possibly exhausting drive.

Cheapest/Best way to rent a car in Zagreb

I will be travel in Croatia from Zagreb to Dubrovnik and back with lots of stops. I%26#39;ve heard people make reservations for a car but when they come they have trouble getting a car. What%26#39;s the best and cheapest way to rent a car while there?

|||

We had an odd situation last May. Our flight to Trieste was cancelled and we ended up booking into Zagreb at the last minute. We had a tough time finding a car but eventually got one at Avis. The service was fabulous and price comparable to anyone else. We ended up dropping in Split without any additional charge. And the service was fabulous there, too.

I highly recommend Avis!

We had lots of fun driving in Croatia. The new freeway is incredible with absolutely nobody on it! Do be careful between Split and Dubrovnik. You simply cannot average more than about 35MPH. And the unmarked speed traps are everywhere. We got stopped and had to talk our way out of a ticket.

Have fun.

Hotel near Dubrovnik airport - any recommendation?

We are thinking about taking a 6:30am flight out of Dubrovnik airport to Frankfurt (we have a connecting flight to catch) after our visit in May 08. I guess that means we need to get to airport by 4:30am(?!), Does any hotel provide transportation so early in the morning? Any recommendation?

|||

all the hotels provide transfers as early as necessary. Just ask them when booking or book through any agency to have that organized as well

|||

I don%26#39;t really think there are any hotels right at the airport. While it%26#39;s a little bit of distance from the city, it would be easy enough to get out there early in the morning and not have to hassle with changing hotels.

|||

No there aren%26#39;t any hotels at the airport. But maybe you could spend the last night in Cavtat which is really close to the airport?

Report on day trip to Montenegro

I did a day trip from Dubrovnik to Montenegro with Elite Tours in early September 2007.

I boooked before I left home. Trips to Montenegro aren%26#39;t available every day, so it is probably a good idea to check it out before you go to make sure it fits in your schedule. The bus was more than three-quarters full on the day I went. Atlas offers a similar day trip.

I met the bus at the Pile Gate at 7:30am and did not get back until 8:30pm.

It’s a beautiful drive around the Kotor Fjord to the walled town of Kotor where we had about an hour of free time to explore. We then travelled up the Snake’s Road (with 25 hairpin bends) and spectacular views. We stopped for lunch at a place selling smoked ham and cheese sandwiches and a selection of drinks. If you don’t like ham and cheese sandwiches, you should take something else for lunch - no other options were available.

We then went to the old Royal Palace at Cetijne – refreshingly modest in comparison to the palaces of Russia and Western Europe. Finally, we had an hour of free time in Budva, an interesting beach resort for the well-heeled. It has a fortified town on one side and a pebble beach covered in deckchairs and surrounded by tacky souvenir shops on the other side. It’s easy to fill in the hour.

The currency in Montenegro is euros – although you only need enough for lunch, drinks, ice-creams and souvenirs. A day trip from Dubrovnik provided sufficient time to get a feel for this relatively new country that is clearly still building itself.

I have only been to Kotor once, July 2007, on a cruise ship. We sailed the entire 14 miles from the Adriatic, docked for the day, and then out in the evening. It was AWESOME. However you get there, its a must-see. The hike up to the church, through the walls at the back of teh old town, provides breathtaking views. A postcard mailed from the post office there to the US did take about a month to arrive however.

Good luck. We%26#39;re cruising again in June 2008 and stopping in Dubrovnik, so I%26#39;m searching for the standard day-long activities: sounds like the wall must be the first stop.

|||

Hi Wal on Hol,

can you remember what this trip cost you?

we may well hire a car for a few days instead and it would be good to compare car hire with an organised trip.

Thanks

Car rental in Croatia

Has anyone rented a car from economycarrentals.com in Croatia? If so, were they alright? Also, any comments on driving in Croatia? Plan to drive from Dubrovnik to Split, stopping along the way. Thanks.

|||

We rented a car from Dubrovnik area but booked it direct through our hotel, not internet. It was OK. Driving in Croatia is similar to anywhere on the continent, the locals appear to be in a big hurry. You should drive with your headlights on during the daytime. The scenery along the coast road is wonderful.

The biggest problem I had, was still driving like a Croatian the first few days back in UK.

Have a safe trip.

|||

While they may be %10 or so more than economycarrentals.com, I%26#39;d recommend holidayautos.co.uk. I%26#39;ve used them to book all over Europe and North America and never had any problems. We%26#39;re planning on going to Croatia for a week this spring and will be using them again.

|||

I think economycarrentals is OK. I have booked from them and they are certainly cheaper than the other operators.

Headlights MUST be on. Cost you 300 Kuna if not.

Stopping on the way I suggest Ston and maybe %26quot;my village%26quot;, Komarna if you want to see a real sleepy and unspoiled place.

And also Stop in Makarska and Omis.

|||

Travelling solo in mid-October I%26#39;ve considered a car rental along the same route yet have read the bus system is excellent and have decided to do that. What made you decide to drive? SK

|||

Thanks so much for all of your comments. We like to drive because that way you do not have to adhere to schedules %26amp; can stop along the way if you see something interesting.

|||

SAVE YOURSELF FROM HAVING A HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE FROM HELL %26amp;amp; GO WITH ANYONE ELSE BUT ECONOMY CAR RENTALS!!!

We booked %26amp;amp; paid for a car rental in Croatia through Economy Car Rentals, who are supplied by HM Car Rentals. It was the absolute worse service we%26#39;ve ever received!!! Not only was the car so filthy (both inside %26amp;amp; out with animal fur, bugs %26amp;amp; bird droppings), when we went to check over the damage report... the staff had missed several scratches, dents, cracks in windscreen etc! When we pointed the problem out, we were told that they had decided to cancel the car hire we had paid for in advance!!! I called Economy Car Hire immediately for help %26amp;amp; their response was... sorry we can%26#39;t help you, we are just the broker! So there we were left high %26amp;amp; dry at Rijeka Airport, without a car %26amp;amp; no other car rental availability until the following day... we had no accommodation organised, as we had planned to drive to Plitvicka National Park. We ended up paying a fortune for a nights accommodation %26amp;amp; £100.00 more for the only car rental available, which unfortunately was the smallest class... a very tight squeeze for 4 grown adults plus luggage.

Venice-Pula (then bus?) to Rijeka for Jadrolina link?

I want to go from Venice to Croatia in April 07, then ferry -hop down the coast to Dubrovnik before returning by Jadrolina Ferries to Bari in Southern Italy . There seem to be fast catamarans from Venice to Pula, and Jadrolina ferries do Rijeka- Hvar- Korcula-Dubrovnik twice a week... but I can%26#39;t see a link from Venice to Rijeka, or a place where ferry routes from Pula intercept those to Dubrovnik.

Prevous posts say there%26#39;s a a bus service from Pula to Rijeka, but can anyone advise on

1- Whether I could do Venice -Pula- Rijeka by about 6pm?

2- any better route Venice- Dub%26#39;nk- I have about 10 days in Croatia?

Thanks

|||

Lat year there was a fast ferry service from Venice to Opatija which is a 15 minute journey from Rijeka. I havn%26#39;t seen the 2007 timetable yet but I hope to get it soon because I am planning one of my wandering trips around Croatia and Montenegro.

|||

Thanks a Million, Balkan Addict- let me know the operator if it occurs to you, and I%26#39;ll look out for it on the web, or in Venice when I get there. A

Car Hire

I will be staying in Cavtat with my family from 23rd March till April 2nd and have been trying to find somewhere to hire a car in Cavtat for two days. Even though it will be Easter it seems that Herz at Hotel Croatia will not be open! My alternative is to hire a car from Celepi Airport and then get transport from Cavtat and back to collect and drop off the car. Does anyone please know if I can get by bus from Cavtat to the airport first thing in the morning and then return in the evening? Or can anyone please tell me the cost of a taxi from Cavtat to the airport? Many thanks to anyone who can help-

Chris Norfolk, England

|||

Are you flying into Cilipi?

|||

Yes I%26#39;m flying into Celipi but I don%26#39;t need the car until midway through my holiday.

|||

Cilipi airport is only down the road from Cavtat .When you leave Cavtat and meet the main road you can actually see the landing lights .

A taxi should not cost more than €10 - € 15 . There are a least four carhire booths in Cilipi .That will be the best option for you , beware when you hire that some of the firms dont cover you to drive in Montenegro .

|||

Thanks for that information. I don%26#39;t suppose which of the rental firms do allow travel to Montenegro - I know that I may have to pay for extra insurance cover.

Is this change of itinerary a good one - Including Mostar?

I had posted this on the Bosnia Forum, but I only received one reply so I thought I would try this Forum.

I do not know how many times I have changed our itinerary because of the ferry/catamaran schedules to Havar and Korcula. (We will be in Split the second week of May.) I have been reading about Mostar and Blagaj, and they sound so wonderful and so much more interesting than the Islands. Since we are not beach people -- love history and the like -- I think that this itinerary for this part of the trip might be better, and easier because of luggage

-- and I would appreciate the opinion of someone who has been there and knows the area.

Take the bus from Split to Mostar and stay two nights and either a day and a half or one full day. Maybe even two full days. (One less day in Dubrovnik) Then either take a bus to Dubrovnik or have a driver take us to Orebic to catch the ferry to spend some time in Korcula. Then take the bus, if there is one, to Dubrovnik either late afternoon or early evening. (I have to check the schedule.) If there is no bus going to Dubrovnik, then stay overnight in Orebic and catch the early morning bus. If we use a driver to take us to Orebic, it would be nice to fit Ston and Mali Ston in there, if we can. As I am writing this, Solona comes to mind. I believe it might be near Mostar, but then it could be near Split. If anyone has been to Solona, I would like to know how much time will be needed to see it in a leisurely fashion.

Also, I noticed a very interesting B%26amp;B in Mostar, Muslibegovic House, which is a museum. Does anyone know anything about it? Is it near the center of town? It appears to be at the top of a cliff.

If I can just get this part of the trip together I think we will be set to go. That is, except to find a day tour to take us to Montenegro on one of the days that we will be in Dubrovnik. If not, I guess we will have to hire a driver to take us.

I am open to any and all suggestions, including a private driver and some good restaurants in Mostar, or anything else that would enhance the trip. For whatever reason, this trip has been so difficult for me to put together. I think it is the ferry/catamaran schedule. If we were going from Dubrovnik to Split, and doing the Islands in between, then this whole itinerary would have been a piece of cake.

As always, I really appreciate whatever help anyone can give me. Without you I could never put this trip together. And it will be put together. There is such a wealth of knowledge on this forum, and willing sharers. Thanks.

I just think its a great change for you to go to Mostar. I was such a great eye-opener for me and though I love being at the beach, our trip to Mostar was well worth the time. We just spent a day there and we were kind of rushed. I would think a day and a half or two days would be great there. It was great just to wander there, to shop in the Muslim shops, to hear the Muezzin call the people to pray, to see the bombed out buildings--- it was just a great cultural experience for me. Go for it and then get to Korcula! When we were in Mostar we met some other Americans walking the cobbled streets and they had said they were in Korcula and was their favorite place. We were just heading there too and they were right about Korcula. Such a nice, quiet and historical place too. You won%26#39;t be disappointed with Korcula or Mostar.

|||

Thanks, Barrymanilow. You have helped me in the past and you have again.

Mostar really looks so intriguing. Will really try to get to Korcula. If we do not try to do a same day roundtrip (if there is an excursion) to Hvar from Split we should be able to do it. Or we might have to lop off another day from Dubrovnik. Decisions, decisions, decisions. Thanks again for your input and time.

Hello , I looked at your trip plan , it will be little dificult to do and see all this places. Maybe antother sugestion for you .

Mostar , old town , is soo beautifull , when you se it , you will know that words cant discrabe it. Sarajevo is only 2,5 hour with car away from Mostar and you can also see old town and Bascarsija.

Also , only 40 minutes with car from Split is Sibenik whitch has history and beautiful catedral.From Sibenik is NP Krka (only 30 minutes by car)and NP Kornati - 1000 islands. If you can put this in your plan trip , it would be great. Good luck with it.

|||

GGOGI - Thanks for your suggestions. It sounds great for another time, but this is only one part of our trip, and it is going in a different direction.

Thanks.

Croatia - family fun

We are a family of four with two 8 year olds looking for a family holiday in Croatia where we will be either near a lake or the sea and have access to activities. We are also keen on a little rustic culture! We are looking for a hotel / apartment where we are likely to meet other families. Thompsons super family style hotels would be our %26#39;nightmare%26#39;. In the past we have been on Mark Warner Neilson Beach plus and Lykia World type holidays. This year we are seeking the same but on a tighter budget. Any suggestions

|||

Look up something on Brac or Vis. It also depends on time of the year you are here. I assume we are talking about summer time. There are families everywhere and there are few strictly family oriented places. Maybe Biograd would be a good choice but please note that it tends to get crowded (like everywhere on the coast).

Island of Vis would be my first choice and especially the town of Vis. If going there, make sure you explore the island. Look up agency Navigator in Vis for additional info.

|||

Would also suggest Brac (Bol). Primosten is another area that always has families there.

what do you love about Croatia?

I will be in Berlin for business in mid-May and want to take the opportunity to go somewhere new. I%26#39;m thinking eastern Europe for two reasons (1) many countries sound to be in the process of developing their tourism market, and I%26#39;d like to hit some before it gets worse; and (2) the dollar will suck in value and I%26#39;m sure the eastern countries are likely to be a bit more affordable.

So I%26#39;m thinking maybe Croatia, maybe the Czech Republic. I%26#39;d LOVE to hear any thoughts you have on where we should and should not go (about a week to visit).

THANKS!

|||

Hi Gretchen

It would be difficult to see much of both countries in a week. With one week in Croatia, I would concentrate on the Dalmatian Coast and Islands. I would suggest trying to fly into either Split or Dubrovnik and then ferry hopping along the coast via Hvar and Korcula, e.g. two or three nights in Dubrovnik, one or two nights in Korcula, one or two nights and a night in Split. Plitvice Lakes are another highlight of Croatia but they are situated a fair way from Split (half way between Zadar and Zagreb).

On the other hand, you could spend a week in the Czech Republic combining your time between Prague (which you can easily spend four or five nights) and Cesky Krumlov which you could spend a couple of nights. Another place that I really enjoyed in the Czech Republic is Telc which you might be able to combine.

Lurls.

|||

Hi. Croatia and the Czech Republic are really quite distant, so you%26#39;d probably have to choose between one of them.

However, Zagreb in Croatia has some things in common with Prague (they were in the same country not 100 years ago so they do share a lot of architecture, for example) so if you visit one of them, you%26#39;ll get the idea how the other looks like.

I do think that, if you%26#39;re going by car, bus or train Czech Rep. is the choice for you as it%26#39;s much closer to Berlin than Croatia. If you%26#39;re going by plane, it%26#39;s pretty much all the same to you.

If you go to Czech Republic, Prague is the most interesting place there, even though it%26#39;s not really true that it%26#39;s just developing its tourist market - Prague (and Croatian coast, for that matter) are big destinations for quite a while.

If you go to Croatia, most people go to the coast. I%26#39;m not personally a big fan of the (particulary southern) Croatian coast, but I can understand why most people love it. If you%26#39;ve ever been to any of the Mediterreanean countries, they share a lot of similarities so you get the idea. If you%26#39;re looking to see the inland, Zagreb is the most interesting place from where you can make some day trips (Plitvice or Ljubljana, for example).

If you%26#39;re really into seeing yet undeveloped tourist markets, I can recommend Belgrade in Serbia. It%26#39;s 250mi east of Zagreb and it%26#39;s really a great city. Even though I%26#39;m from Zagreb, I highly recommend Belgrade. It%26#39;s bigger, cheaper and much less touristy (even though Zagreb is not a tourist mecca either yet). You can make some great day trips from there (Novi Sad, for example).

Have a great trip!

|||

I am not an expert on Croatia, having visited just this past week to Zadar and Split with a drive up along the coast...BUT

from my short experience, I would not say you will find a better value for your US Dollar there. All the hype I had read that it was so cheap in Croatia was just that...hype. The hotels were priced high for the size of rooms and features and the food costs were the same. Even though this was low season (I was the only guest in one hotel for most of my stay) - the prices were the same as high season.

The locals were complaining that prices keep going up while their salaries stay the same and many of them just don%26#39;t know if they%26#39;ll be able to make it.

I was in Prague for the second time a few months ago - you can find a few more deals on hotels there but, again, prices were not %26quot;cheap%26quot;.

So, I would certainly recommend people visit Croatia if they desire, but not with an expectation of low prices.

|||

1. The ever changing scenery - forest, mountain, lake, hilltop village, town and village by the sea.

2. The clear and clean sea.

3. For us Brits good food at reasonable prices.

4. Croatian brandy, especialy the plum brandy.

5. Good roads generaly uncrowded by our standards.

6. The standard of cleanliness in the cafes, restaurants and toilets (mens room to you).

7. The trout meal in Slunj.

8. Plitvice lakes and Baska on Krk island.

Things I did not like

1. Graffiti in Zagreb.

2. The Croatian national football team.

You can see from my travel map that I am an experienced traveller. Croatia really hit the spot for me and my wife.

|||

Definitely agree that there is not enough time to do both. My husband and I love both countries so that is a difficult one.

What I Love About the Czech Republic

- easy to navigate and drive compared to many countries (especially rural)

- slower and easy going atmosphere

- gorgeous countryside and lovely castles

- Prague is wonderful but overrun with tourists

- culture is very interesting and unique

- great architecture

- tons of great villages with fabulous town squares

- cheap

- Cesky Krumlov is a magical gem

- Cesky Raj area north of Prague is little known and offers beauty, history, architecture, etc. Love it.

- very cheap accommodation. The most we have paid so far is 50 euros per double.

What I Do Not Love about the CR

- I love Prague but detest the crowds. However, it is still one of my favourite cities if you ignore that aspect.

What I Love About Croatia

- my favourite country in the world (besides Scotland).

- My favourite area was Istria followed by Plitvice Lakes and Dubrovnik and islands. And Trogir (near Split).

- love the food stands along the roads selling local cheeses, wines and olive oils

- love the spit-roasted food along roadsides

- love the people

- probably has the most stunning and spectacular scenery I have ever seen (hill towns, coast, islands...)

- some hill towns we have visited are virtually deserted and very, very quiet

- the fresh sea food is fabulous (though can be pricey)

- very cheap accommodation can be found. The most we have ever paid thus far has been 50 euros for a double.

- snorkelling is great.

- truffle hunting is a blast!

- tons of trees and lovely gardens

What I Do Not Like About Croatia

- although I love Dubrovnik the crowds can sometimes get annoying

Man, I could go on and on.

I find both countries to be less expensive than most (except further east, of course). However, Prague and Dubrovnik can be nearly as expensive as other large cities (but still cheaper than London and Paris).

Let us know what you decide! Either way you definitely cannot go wrong. May is our favourite time to travel to both (well, almost anywhere).

|||

Great post about Croatia chefathome. The things you mention are the same things I love about Croatia.

|||

cidercyber said.

%26quot; Things I did not like 2. The Croatian national football team.%26quot;

Brilliant! (and bloody true too). You%26#39;ll get a chance to swing that mood as we are in a same group for the next World Cup.

Thank you soooo much for any replies and suggestions!

|||

you have fast road from Å¡estanovvac..

not drive friday and saturday

|||

thanks merry11!!! I %26#39;ll look into that option...

|||

I do not think that Dubrovnik is completely booked for July 5th and 6th.

Did you check all hotels there or maybe private accomodation. There are also smaller town near Dubrovnik...

If you will go from Dubrovnik to Zagreb by car stop at Plitvice national park (lakes) www.np-plitvicka-jezera.hr/cpage.aspx…

Hvar - Bol

I have a holiday booked for 3 days in Hvar and 3 days in Bol. Does anyone know how if there is a ferry/catamaran between the Hvar and Bol? If not, what is the quickest way to get there? (I fear I might need to go back to split and catch a boat from there!)

|||

there is a water taxi; it costs cca 400 euro for 10 pax; or you could take a catamaran at 1.00 PM Hvar-Milna /Brac/ and then by bus to Bol

bye

jeanne

|||

There is also the catarmarin from Jelsa to Bol every morning very early but since Jelsa is some way from Hvar town this may be impractical.

There are also excursion boats from Hvar to Bol (and vice versa) that usually run daily in the morning and I have known people use these as a one way trip to get from one town to the other. Not sure how the skippers react to it but I suppose if they get their full money (maybe £12 per person) they don%26#39;t care as long as your bags don%26#39;t take up too much room.

|||

Did you enjoy staying three days in Hvar? We%26#39;re considering the same in June. Anything you would recommend as a not to miss?

Self - catering in Hvar.

Hi,

We(4) are looking for self catering accommodation for 5 nights in early August. We%26#39;d prefer air con. not too much noise and at a reasonable cost! Any suggestions?

Thanks.

|||

I think that 90% of private accomodation have air conditioner, maybe more. It can be noise only in the town center because the main square is always full of turists. What is %26quot;reasonable cost%26quot; for you :) August is the high season so the prices are high in that period. If you would like to come in August be sure to make the reservation ASAP because in August it is very difficult to find a free bed.

Need apt in Hvar Town for 3 nights Aug 11-14 2006

My girlfriend and I are looking for an affordable place to rent for 3 nights in the high season. We want to stay as close to Hvar town as possible. Please help? Is it ok to arrive in Hvar town without a reservation anywhere at that time and expect to find something? Thanks.

|||

Hi,

I arrived in Hvar without reservations and had no problem finding a place. Many people meet you at the dock and offer rooms for rent. I stayed in a beautiful private residence close in and only paid the equiv of $16 per night.

3 nights is a long time unless you want to just relax.

|||

are you sure i can arrive even in august?

|||

yes,you%26#39;d probably be ok just turning up,but if you know your dates you may as well book.i stayed at a reallly clean and friendly hostel www.greenlizard.hr It was about a 8/9 leisurely walk from centre,but it was such a beautiful walk anyway.when you look at it on a map it looks miles out,and is a lot further if you walk on the road,but when you get there they tell you a real shortcut that goes down some steps and along the seafront.highly recommended!

|||

I would contact dalmatia.net

They have been very helpful with our accomadations for this summer.

|||

Hi dole98665

Do you remember the name of the private residence that you stayed ay? Or have a website for them? we are going mid July for 3 nights and looking for somewhere in Hvar Town

|||

Be careful of Dalmatia.net. I booked an apartment in Split through them. They required a 10 euro deposit which would be applied to my final balance to the apartment owner. When I arrive to the apartment to pay the owner the owner says that Dalmatia.net charges a 10 euro payment for their booking service and that this is never used to pay the apartment owner. I contacted Dalmatia.net to let them know about the discrepency and they never returned my email.

|||

Hi there

I was in Hvar last year in August and I stayed in the place below. I can%26#39;t actually remember exactly how much it was but it think it was around 350 euro for the week - that was between two.This was alot lot cheaper than any of the hotels in Hvar, they are very expensive.

Anyway myself and my boyfriend really loved this mini villa. It was clean comfortable and you had your own terrace to sit on with a fabulous view. It was perfect location wise - its very peaceful and quiet but literally 2 minutes walk from the centre of hvar. (The only thing is I wouldn%26#39;t reccommend it for very elderly or disabled people as it MAY be a tiny bit steep on the way up - its sort of on a little hill. but it would be fine for most people) The woman who owns the villa lives just next door - and she is a lovely lady. Very friendly and very helpful but also unintrusive. I%26#39;d highly recommend this place. We had our own cooker and made breakfast every morning and sat on the terrace and enjoyed the view!If I go to Hvar again in the future i will definitely stay here. If you don%26#39;t like this particular apartment though there are plenty of others to choose from on this site and they are all very reasonably priced.

Check out : http://www.hvar.hr/kairos/eng/index.htm

By the way I would definitely make sure you pre book your accomodation in high season. You may very well find somewhere but I wouldn%26#39;t like to take the risk of being stranded if everywhere is booked up! - which could be the case!

Best of luck with the trip!

|||

@ dole - hahahaha

%26quot;3 nights is a long time unless you want to just relax%26quot;

I think that you haven%26#39;t seen anything except carpe diem and veneranda.

on this island you could stay few months and you could not see everything ;)

I live here 30 yrs and every day I find something new I didn%26#39;t realise before.

I will write one topic about the things too see and to do on island of Hvar. Soon...
