Dubrovnik to Mostar and Sarajevo

What is the best way to travel from Dubrovnik to Mostar and Sarajevo? is it safe to drive there? We will be with another couple. Could we hire a car and driver to take us? Is it a scenic route? How long to each city? I%26quot;ve heard there%26#39;s a train from Ploce. Would that be a better option? We will be making this trip next September. Thanks.

I think the best way is to go up the coast from Dubrovnik, to Neum, and then to Metkovic inland, and then on to Mostar. A good place to stop on this route is Pocitelj, a picturesque town in Bosnia along the Neretva. Yes it is a safe drive.

Your options would be to rent a car, find a driver to take you there, or take the bus. No trains from the Dubrovnik area though. We didn%26#39;t go all the way to Sarajevo, but we did spend a day in Mostar and it was time well worth spent.

Thank you Barry. Your advice is always helpful and clear. We will probably take a day trip from Dubrovnik and only go as far as Mostar.

We just returned from Croatia this past week, and took the trip from Dubrovnik to Mostar. It is approximately a 3 hour drive each way with stops. I agree that a stop in Pocitelj is worthwhile. You will have an opportunity to purchase many dried fruits as well as trinkets. It is a lovely little town. The drive is very scenic with driving along the coast, thru mountains and farming areas.

Our group did have a driver. We could have done it ourselves, and yes it is safe. Mostar is very interesting. Try to set up a local guide because you will probably have a better understanding of the cuture and the inpact on the recent war. When you first come into town it can be somewhat disconcerting due to the very obvious ravages of the war.

Couple of things to be aware of. Bring your passport since you will be crossing the boarder to another country. Also the currency is different but they do take the Croatian kuno. Most everyone speaks English and is welcoming and very nice to tourists - even Americans!

A really picturesque way to get from Mostar to Sarajevo is by the early morning train which winds up along the Neretva River through some really spectacular scenery.
