Generally,if you avoid July and August nowhere will be overcrowded by tourists.

I would recommend the island of Rab. It is not well known as most of the other destinations but it has stunning landscapes and agency arbadventure does sea kayak trips that are mind bogling! caves, cliffs, sandy beaches... Everything is there plus cultural sights. in the old city of Rab.

could I suggest the village of Cavtat - it is 15 km apprx from dubrovnik - doesn%26#39;t get extremely overrun - very relaxing - fab walks , great swimming at the back of the promenade, and you can go to dubrovnik by bus or boat anytime - bus takes half hour, boat 40 minutes.

Paradise

In my mind, you do want to be in the Dubrovnik area. Although I have never stayed in Cavtat, it might be well worth looking into.

You could try one of the islands close to Dubrovnik such as Lopud or Sipan which have fairly frequent ferries into town. Sipan is great for walking as there are miles of paths that you can wander along seeing perhaps just the odd goat or two. Lopud has the best beaches in the area but they can get crowded at weekends. There are a couple of companies in Dubrovnik that do walking and kayaking trips in the area and there is a scuba diving school based at the hotel on Sipan.

I like Balkan Addicts idea...you could be on one of the islands to get away from it all, but yet you are close enough to Dubrovnik to enjoy all that it has to offer.
