Cheapest/Best way to rent a car in Zagreb

I will be travel in Croatia from Zagreb to Dubrovnik and back with lots of stops. I%26#39;ve heard people make reservations for a car but when they come they have trouble getting a car. What%26#39;s the best and cheapest way to rent a car while there?

We had an odd situation last May. Our flight to Trieste was cancelled and we ended up booking into Zagreb at the last minute. We had a tough time finding a car but eventually got one at Avis. The service was fabulous and price comparable to anyone else. We ended up dropping in Split without any additional charge. And the service was fabulous there, too.

I highly recommend Avis!

We had lots of fun driving in Croatia. The new freeway is incredible with absolutely nobody on it! Do be careful between Split and Dubrovnik. You simply cannot average more than about 35MPH. And the unmarked speed traps are everywhere. We got stopped and had to talk our way out of a ticket.

Have fun.
