Croatia cheap and cheerful? or expensive

We will be in Croatia for a couple of weeks in June and I am finding it hard to gauge prices, accommodation seems to run from 30 euro to 80+ euro per night but places look similar, so I am confused.

Also what%26#39;s the average per head price in a standard restaurant, say a main course. Is wine expensive? is beer cheaper??

I would love for some kind advisor to give a run down on the current prices of things , bottle of water, loaf of bread , cup of coffee, etc.

hvala!

private apartments range from great to crapy. Also, owners are a separate story! You may meet great folks and have someone crazy run the place. That is why people invented the hotels :))))

Restaurants - Expect to pay around 200Kn or 30 Euros for ok diner withot wine. Wines start at 20 Euros and up (bottled ones) but you can get some good local wines served for under 15 Euros. Seafood is expensive!

Just now I stopped at Kapetanova Kuca in Ston Mali for oysters and paid 9 Kn (1,5 Euros) for one oyster. But this is a very pricey place!

Astra,

I can give you 2007 prices in Bol (which is a place where prices are generally on the higher side). About 7-8 Kuna to the Euro.

Restaurant

Draught Beer 16 Kuna per 500ml

House Wine 65 Kn per litre

Prsut (dried ham) 55kn per 100g

Pizza 35-50 kn

Pasta 45-70 kn

Steak 70-90 kn

White Fish 200-250kn per kilo (they will show you the fish before cooking and weigh it so you know how much it costs)

Lobster 400kn per kilo

Coffee 8 kn

Bottled wine is expensive (but some is very good)but you%26#39;ll also get some good house wines - don%26#39;t be afraid to ask to try some before committing

In the shops

beer 7kn 500ml

local wine 25kn per litre

bread 7kn big loaf

water 5 kn litre

You shouldn%26#39;t expect to pay more than 45Euro per night for a double room in Bol in high season unless its very good or unless you have left it very late. Most will be low to mid 30 euroes but of course the owners will start off high - don%26#39;t be afraid to question/haggle. Stays of less than 3 days will often carry a surcharge. Appartment prices will vary according to size and facilities. In early June, you shouldn%26#39;t be paying top prices. Hope that helps.

moralaque , Thanks for that i shall be stirring clear of the oysters!! or maybe...

Spitfire thats exactly what i was looking for, many thanks, astra

I am going to go with the cheap and cheerful! I didn%26#39;t think Croatia was very expensive at all. Spitfire gave you some great info!

|||

Spitfire

Steak at 70 - 90!?!?!?!?

I NEVER paid under 100 in 2007 and in some places it was 120

|||

Not in the shops/supermarkets but in the restaurants/bars and other services there is a tourist tradition to add an %26quot;extra value%26quot; to the check.(Amazingly, they never calculate less.)

I do not know where in the Europe is cheap %26amp; cheerful.(Closest I can think of it is in Bangladesh)

Hi everyone thanks for your comments! ,

kefa, I suppose where i am coming from is I have bought some really well priced flights and am trying to get an insight into Croatia.

Is it aimed at more at the wealthy tourist (St.Tropez style) more than the ordinary tourist who needs good value to really have a great holiday.

If this is the case which areas offer the best value?

Astra: You will find that it is Much, Much more expensive in Dubrovnik and around the Dalmation coast than it is further North, in Istria for example. Istria is making a name for itself in Agri-tourism and internationally known for it%26#39;s truffles. Plenty of pricey boutique hotels and restaurants here but also plenty of cheap local places too. Summer 2007 we had wonderful 2 course meals in local konabars for under 100 kunas (£10)with wine. I have to say the wine was local (domaci) wine which may not be to your taste. But the food was wonderful, fresh and beautifully cooked. And there is always the option of well priced pizza and pasta. It depends whether you want to eat in the up-market tourist restaurants and pay the price otherwise look for the small family run restaurants and you wont go far wrong. I have to say the prices in Dubrovnik over the last few years have become ridiculous, whether we are talking about hotels or restaurants or other activities that tourists involve themselves with. I%26#39;m quite likely to get flak over this post but if you don%26#39;t want to pay outrageous prices then go further North up the coast. You won%26#39;t be disappointed. Don%26#39;t get me wrong I love Dubrovnik and Dalmatia too but not prepared any longer to pay their prices, just for the name.
