what language

I%26#39;ll visit Croatia (Dubrovnic) on my cruise in October and was wandering do I need to learn some phrases to get around and where are the best sites to easily visit for free or at a low cost?

What is the spoken language in Croatia?

|||

The official language of Croatia is Croatian. During the time that Croatia was part of Yugoslavia, it was called Serbo-Croatian. It is a Slavic language similar to Polish and Chech. Almost everyone in Dubrovnik and other parts of Croatia, especailly those areas frequented by tourists speak some English. But like everywhere, the locals appreciate an effort by visitors to learn a few Croatian phrases.

Hvala--thank you

Molim vas--please

Dobar dan--good day

You get the gist. Enjoy your trip!

my wife and I speak only english (with and southern US accent). We spent nearly a week in DBV and had no trouble communicating with any business operator, including street vendors. Only minor issue was with bus driver who did not speak english.

My Los Angeles neighborhood is full of Croatian immigrants and their descendents, and before traveling to Croatia, we kept asking the locals to help us out with a few phrases. The universal reply was %26quot;don%26#39;t bother, everyone there speaks English.%26quot; We learned a few phrases anyway, but our neighbors were pretty much right. We traveled out of season, by car, and included several areas not frequented by tourists in our itinerary, and hardly ran into anyone who didn%26#39;t speak English. The English speakers included hotel maids, gas station attendants, bartenders, grandmothers, little children, and the police who pulled me over for driving without daytime headlights on the Split-Dubrovnik. I%26#39;ve found less English spoken in New York, or my own city of Los Angeles, than in Croatia or Slovenia.
