Accommodation in Croatia in July

In July I am going for 9 days, starting in Split, ideally would like to take in several different places - not sure where yet - maybe Brac, Hvar, Brela - my question is ... can you just turn up and expect to get a room/apartment with a local person during peak season? All the accommodation sites will only let you book for 7 nights during this time, and ideally I only want 3 nights in each place.

if you book a hotel you can book 3 days but private accomodation owners prefer the tourists who will stay more days. Maybe if you book in advance it will be different...

You can usually get 3 nights without paying more but I suppose it is peak season so the forward bookers are holding out for a week. When you arrive on a boat or a bus you will certianly find people offering accommodation, and they will take 3 days. Whether you are happy leaving it to chance on arrival (and also saying no) is a different matter.
