travel From croatia - Greece

Hi, my girlfriend and i will be visiting the croatia/montenegro/greece area as 1 of the many legs of our european tour. We are going to backpack right around europe and will be catching trains most of the time.

We are finding it extremely difficult to work out how to travel from budapest to split to dubrovnik to kotor, to athens. We have worked out that trains are fine until you get to dubrovnik, although we would then like to get to Athens as quick and efficiently as possible.

I have priced flights from neighbouring bigger cities in Croatia/montenegro/serbia and they start at one way prices of over 300 euro!!!

The train system seems to divert to belgrade from kotor and takes 2-3days minimum!

We have then considered hiring a car from Croatia and driving to Athens via Kotor, but have since been told to avoid Albania and Kosovo, and that being from Australia i would find it very difficult with directions etc with absolutely know knowledge of any other language besides English.

I am willing to try and learn phrases in different languages but i%26#39;m not sure this will be enough as i have no idea about croatian, latin, serbian or greek (and i mean absolutely no idea)!

Time and money are my biggest worries apart from safety.

What do you suggest will be the best way to travel this leg, without to many deviations???

Hi Ben,

I%26#39;m an Aussie heading over to Croatia and Greece in June, and also having huge difficutlies finding a way to get from Croatia (ideally SPLIT or DUBROVNIK) to Athens. Just wondering if you happened to work out a fairly painless yet not too expensive (!) way to do this?

Thanks,

SS

The best way to go to Greece from Croatia (Dubrovnik) is by ferry to Bari and then catch a connecting ferry to Patras or any other port in Greece

Thanks so much! Very helpful. The ferries seem to take sooo long - but I guess that%26#39;s why you get a better deal than a flight.

There are no trains to Dubrovnik. You have to use a bus or a ferry to get between Split and Dubrovnik. European buses are usually excellent and I wouldn%26#39;t hesitate to use them. I would hesitate regarding the driving - particularly the cost of insurance if you are taking a car out of the country you hired it from. Also, there is tension around the partition of Kosovo from Serbia and that might increase any premiums. From Dubrovnik you can get the bus to Montenegro usually every morning to Herceg Novi then onto Kotor (or change at HN). By the way Croatian and Serbian are the same langauge...
