driving croaia's coast

This May, we have decided to drive the coast of croatia. We plan to ferry from venice to porec, rent a car, and fly out of dubrovnik. Has anyone else done this?

What are some can%26#39;t misses along the coast?

We are kind of a mix, like to see the popular places, but also like to be original too. So a good mixture would be wonderful. I was hoping we could kind of go with flow and decide on hotels in the moment. Is that a mistake?

I appreciate your help,

Kari

Also, a follow up question to your question, does anyone know how many miles it is from Dubrovnick to Split and from Split to Istria? Thank you.

Just over 200km Dubrovnik to Split on the caost road or look at www.viamichelin.com and then you can decide as to where in Istria you want the distance to

How long is the drive to Pula or Porec (where I can get the ferry to Venice)? Thank you!

I believe that you will be able to just go with the flow in May. I like that idea! On the way to Dubrovnik I would stop in places like Zadar, Trogir, and also try to get out to one of the islands--- Korcula and Hvar would top my list for you.

I think youll find it difficult finding a car rental company in Porec that will allow you to drop it off in Dubrovnik. You would have better luck in Pula, and only with a rent-a-car company with offices country-wide. When you contact them, this should be the first question you ask.

It would be much easier to %26quot;go with the flow%26quot; in May than in would in July or August, so you shouldnt expect a problem when it comes to securing hotel rooms or private accommodations.

The drive from Pula to Porec, if you take the Istarski Ipsilon (Istrian %26quot;Y%26quot;- the new fast road shaped as a... you guessed it.), you shouldnt need more than 45min under normal driving conditions.

As to places to visit, some suggestions have already been made.

We did a similar trip two years ago in July. We flew to Zagreb, we stayed there then visited Ptuj in Slovenia, spent two nights in Ljubljana, went to Bled in between to swim in the lake. Then the coastal part started from Rovinj, then Baska in Krk Island (I dont recommend really there are nicer islands) to Zadar, then Trogir, then Hvar, then Dubrovnik and inland to Mostar and Sarajevo back to Zagreb. Although we didn%26#39;t visit Rab island and Korcula looks nice too... Out of these, on the coast, I%26#39;d definitly recommend Rovinj, (Zadar is part old, part new, and it is not homogeneous so you see some ugly new buildings next to very nice old buildings which somehow ruins the ambiance, and also very limited accomodation in the old town) Trogir, Hvar (it is both lively and old) and Dubrovnik (a bit too touristic though).
