Ston, Mali Stone, Korcula, Dubrovnic-Changing ItineraryAgain

Hi Again,

I%26#39;m back with my Korcula dilemma. Just when I think I am set to go with my itinerary something else pops into my head.

First of all, we will not be driving; we have to use public transportation, etc. We will be leaving Mostar Thursday, May 15.

From Split we will be taking a bus to Mostar (2 nights-1 full day)

From Mostar we have hired a driver to drive us to Dubrovnic. Along the way, at this point, we will be visiting Pociteli, Blagaj Teija, Mali Ston and Ston.

(Originally I thought Ston and Mali Ston were on the way to Dubrovnic.)

When checking the map, I notice that Ston is about 12 km from Orebic, which means we will be near Korcula.

On Saturday we were going to take a bus tour from Dubrovnic to Korcula. If we did that, we would be retracing our steps from the day before. As an aside, on that point, since there is a tour bus from Dubrovnic to Korcula on that day, do you think that the tour bus, for a fee, would take us back to Dubrovnic?

We could take a bus from Split to Ploce and return and then take the bus to Mostar, but since I read the bus does not always meet the ferry to take passengers to Orebic, that does not make me feel too comfortable. Then from Mostar we could do our stops along the way, except for Mali Ston and Ston.

My questions are:

1. Are Mali Ston and Ston worth visiting? (We do not eat oysters, etc.) If so, how much time would we need for both?

2. Since we will be near Korcula, do you think that we should have the driver take us to a hotel in Orebic and the next morning take the ferry to Korcula?

3. Leave Korcula early afternoon. Would it be better to get ourselves to Ploce and take the bus to Dubrovnic or hire a driver to drive us from Orebic to Dubrovnic?

4. Does anyone have any recommendations for a driver from Orebic to Dubrovnic and how much it might cost?

I just keep trying to find the best way to handle the visit to Korcula. I have lost count as to the number of different scenarios I have thought of.

There are such knowledgeable and helpful people on this Forum. I know there has to be someone who can finally put this Korcula visit to rest.

Sorry for such a long posting.

I am open to all suggestions.

As always, thanks for any and all help.

hi I don%26#39;t really understand your itinerary, it seems very complicated...

Orebic is 57 km from Ston.

It takes 1 to 2 hours to visit Ston and Mali ston if you go for a walk on the walls.

Yes, have your driver driving you to Orebic, visit Korcula then go to Dubrovnik, by bus, by driver or by ferry with a stopover on Mljet.

for example.

We stopped in Ston and Mali Ston on our way from Dubrovnik to Orebic (by bus). If you don%26#39;t like seafood, there isn%26#39;t a great reason even to stop here for a meal. Mali Ston has a few very good seafood restaurants, but also expensive even by Western Europe standards.

The wines that they try to get you to stop for in Ston are widely available in Orebic and Korcula.

The ferries run late from Orebic to Korcula in summer, although I%26#39;m not sure this is true in May. It%26#39;s such a short trip there are many private excursion boats. You might be able to take the ferry to Korcula straight away and sleep there.

There%26#39;s buses and ferries from Orebic to Dubrovnik:

Sounds like you%26#39;ll have a great trip.

Hi Collette,

Thanks for taking the time for a reply.

I thought walking around the streets of Ston/Mali Ston would be interesting. I also thought that their seafood restaurants would be great, and if the time was right, we could stop there for lunch. If you remember, did their menus offer only shellfish or were other fish dinners on the menu?

We booked our hotel in Orebic. We thought it would be easier with the luggage (two women) and hopefully getting a bus in the afternoon of the next day to Dubrovnik. Or, if need be, a taxi.

Now I am going to check the bus schedule. I really appreciate it the schedule. I tried to find it in the past and was unsuccessful. Since we are going out of season, transportation is a little difficult.

Again, thanks for the information.

Happy travels.

Mali Ston would be a fine place for lunch if you%26#39;re there anyway. Yes, they have good fish, calamari, etc. But the real specialty is shellfish. Mail Ston (translated=little ston) is down the road a bit from Ston. I remember at least a 1/2 hour walk, maybe more. You don%26#39;t need to stop in both places.

I%26#39;d rather spend time in Korcula than Orebic. %26quot;Left luggage%26quot; is more popular in Croatia than other countries I%26#39;ve been to. It%26#39;s a service Tourist Info places would often offer. You might be able to email Orebic TI and ask them. e-mail: tz-orebic@tz-orebic.hr

That way you could spend time where you want instead of worrying about having to lug all of your bags with you.

Hi Collette,

We will be spending the night at a hotel in Orebic. (I felt it would be easier all the way around.) When we arrive in Orebic at the hotel, we can just drop off the luggage in our room and take the ferry over to Korcula, walk around and come back when we want. Then the next morning we can return to Korcula and see what there is to see. Then in the afternoon leave for Dubrovnik by whatever means.

I checked the bus site that you had posted. I could not understand it. All I could find was the departure from Dubrovnik to Orebic. I need Orebic to Dubrovnik. (Unless I am misunderstanding, the other two bus companies do not go to Orebic and then Dubrovnik.) If I in error, maybe you can help me with that. We want to leave Orebic for Dubrovnik in the afternoon of May 16. There is a bus early in the morning. I am under the impression that is the only bus of the day for May.

I am in the midst of solving our transportation problem in Zagreb. We will not have a car. We want to visit the castles and Varazdin. There is a bus to Varazdin, but there are no buses to the other two castles. No tours when we are going to be there. I have e-mailed various TI%26#39;s and one of the castles, but I have not heard back. The agencies want four arms and four legs for a private driver. One wanted approximately $1,000 to make the ten-hour trip. Another one wanted a little less. All I want is a car -- not a fancy one -- and a reliable English-speaking person to drive it.

Again, thanks for your help.

Email the Orebic TI and see if you get a response about transportation from Orebic to Dubrovnik.

We rented a car at the Zagreb airport. There%26#39;s an airport bus that will take you from the town bus station to the airport. We found the best rates from Sixt. It wasn%26#39;t cheap ($50/day?), but much less expensive than what you%26#39;ve been quoted.

We hate renting cars, but found it easy to drive in Croatia. Roads are well marked and you drive on the right.

Transportation in Croatia can be very difficult to figure out from home ahead of time. But it was much easier once we were there. We traveled a little out of season too, and there still seemed to be at least two options to get anywhere, and for a reasonable amount of money.

|||

Hi Collette,

I had contacted Sixt. The car and driver, without the guide, is now 400 Euro. With the guide -- which I did not request -- and driver it was 600 Euro. They all quote a Mercedes, which we do not want or need. As far as I am concerned, all we need is a car and a reliable English-speaking driver. We do not want to be fancy; we just want to get there.

I cannot drive heights and bridges, and my friend will not drive, so I will not even attempt to drive it.

I had written various TI%26#39;s about transportation, but as of now, no answer.

I am not too concerned with Orebic; I am concerned with Zagreb. If I cannot get it resolved before I leave, hopefully face-to-face I can get it resolved.

Thanks for all of your help. It is really appreciated.
