Dubrovnik to Zagred and then to Split?

Apologies if this has been posted already - have read so many my head is spinning!

Am going to Croatia at end of August for 2 weeks. Arriving into Dubrovnik and out of Split.

Here%26#39;s my dilemna - my husband and i will be hiring a car and want to see as much as possible but still have a leisurely, relaxing time.

Option 1: (just an idea at the moment) Spend a few days in Dubronik with a day trip or two from there then fly to Zagreb. Spend 1 night in Zagreb then drive to Plitvice National Park, Zadar, Krka, Sibenik or Trogir, Split with a few days left to chill out on one of the islands.

Option 2: Arrive Dubrovnik as above but drive to Split, then Trogir, Krka, Zadar, Plitvice and then back to Split with a few days on one of the islands (still to decide where) before flying home.

Option 1 would mean we miss the drive between Dubrovnik and Split - would it be silly of us to miss this?

And finally...for now...if we did do option one how long would it take to drive Zagreb to Plitvice? Also Plitvice to Zadar I read on previous posts Split to Zagreb takes 3.5 hours but Split to Plitvice takes around 4 hours - am very confused!!!!

Definitely option 2... to me there is no sense to fly into Dubrovnik, then go to Zagreb and then work your way back to the Split area. Why not start in Dubrovnik and hit all the places you want, but fly out of Zagreb and hit Plitvice on your way there?

That would make perfect sense but we have our flights already into Dubrovnik and out of Split so we can%26#39;t leave from Zagreb, sadly.

I also think that a day trip would be ok to do from Split to Plitvice, but it will make for a long day. Or you could just save Plitvice for your next trip to Croatia!!!!
