Dubrovnik to Hvar via Drvenik Ferry?

Hi,

I have been researching transport options for our late September/early October trip to Croatia. We will pick up a rental car in Dubrovnik, then spend a night in Mostar. Then we were going to Split and catch a ferry but since it will be the very beginning of low season the Split-Hvar car ferry won%26#39;t be running every day. I found a guidebook that mentioned the Drvenik to Sucuraj ferry which runs several times a day during low season and is more conveniently located than Split from Mostar. Once we get to Sucuraj we would drive to Hvar town at the other side of the island. Has anyone done this route? Any feedback?

Thanks!

You would have to drive this route, because there isn%26#39;t any other means of transport there. My father and some of my siblings have taken this route and they said they would never drive that road again..actually they were going to go back this way to get to Makarska, but ended up taking a ferry to Split, then driving back down to Makarska. The road from what I understand is very narrow and it drops off quickly with no guard rails.. There have been other posts in the past that have dealt with this route also. Maybe someone else can tell you that its really not that bad after all?

It is indeed a long old road down the length of the island. I%26#39;ve done it once and it seemed to take an age but it would be quicker than going all the way to Split and then taking the 2 hour ferry. I%26#39;d just suggest that if you do go on it, schedule it for daylight and then at least some of you can enjoy the view! Maybe stop for lunch at a great place called Zavala (the Stella Mare hotel) on the south side of of the island. Having said all that, your assessment about the car ferries to Hvar is actually incorrect. Hvar town does not have the facilities to unload cars so that takes place at the deep water harbour at Stari Grad, a town a few miles north of Havr town itself. Even in low season, the car ferries from Split are 3/4 times a day.

the old road over the Hvar island is not that scary, you have just to drive slowly and carefully. The first half when going from Sućuray is really very narrow but the part from Jelsa to Hvar was built several years ago and is much better.

The old road from Jelsa to Hvar still exists, but you don%26#39;t have to go that way.

As Pilot told you there are daily ferries from Split to Starigrad during the whole year 3 times a day, and then there are only 10-15 min drive to Hvar town.

The best is to go one direction via Split and the other via Drvenik.

Thanks so much for the replies! I looked at the ferry website again and found the timetable that shows the Stari Grad- Split ferry a few times per day even in low season. We will do the Drvenik ferry on the way to Hvar and Split ferry on the way out (en route to our next stop of Trogir). Thanks again!
