Ok so at the moment I%26#39;m torn between taking my partner to either Dubrovnik or Sorrento (italy), two different places but they both appeal to me the same ammount, as a suprise for her birthday.
I pretty much posted the same thing in the Sorrento forum aswell, so here goes again;
I shall start by saying unfortunately I am confined to July/August.... which I know unfortunately seems to be the times when the crowds overrun Europe in general, though I went to Sardinia (Alghero) last year in July and was told it would be BUSY, though to be honest it didn%26#39;t really bother me and my partner.
I really don%26#39;t know much about Dubrovnik but it seems it could be the place I%26#39;ve been looking for, as a surprise for my partners birthday.
She likes areas with fantastic views, some history to the area or nearby area.
We will be staying for 11 nights so needs to be enough to keep us occupied!!
Good beaches definitely aren%26#39;t a must (I don%26#39;t know what Dubrovnik%26#39;s beach life is like?!) , in fact as long as the hotel has a nice pool then that would be fine!!
Restaurants with vegetarian selection (no fish) would be extremely helpful!!
Nice town to wonder around, during day and night.
Shopping, though not the Gucci style shops she prefers little cheaper individual style shops!!!
I%26#39;m 23 she is 21 but not at all bothered by neon lights and clubbing, would much prefer the area to not be like that!! A nice meal with good views and a few glasses of wine/beer will do us fine!!
We will be going with Thomson holidays, so obviously are hotel choices are narrowed down, but I have been looking at the GVA hotel Argentina, does anyone have any opinions on this one? Or any other hotel recommendations would be great?! (Don%26#39;t care if it%26#39;s SC, BandB, HB, FB or all inclusive to be honest)!!
Nice areas to walk.
Sorry about the essay, I just like to be sure an area is right for me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards
Richard

Take yourself and your girlfriend to Dubrovnik and stay at the Argentina.
Everything that you have described in your post you will find there and more

I have no idea about Sorrento, so I can not compare the two. The only thing I will say is that 11 days might be long in Dubrovnik. Don%26#39;t get me wrong because I would love to be in Dubrovnik for that long, but I am not sure there will be enough for you to do there for that long, unless you are open to the idea of taking day trips out of there.

HeyRichard,
If you%26#39;re planning on staying in one spot for all 11 days I%26#39;d recommend Sorrento, where you can take day trips or half-day trips by train, bus and ferry to Capri, Pompeii, Paestum, Ercolano, Positano, Amalfi, Naples, Vesuvius, etc. whereas day trip from Dubrovnik will take a little more planning as there may be one or two buses or ferries a day to locations and no trains. If you%26#39;e willing to travel around a bit I%26#39;d say do day trips from Dubrovnik to Kotor, Mljet, and Cavtat then ferry to Korcula, Hvar, and Split, staying a night or two at each, then back to Dubrovnik, with a stop in Mostar? I wouldn%26#39;t spend more than 5 nights in Dubrovnik though.
Loved Dubrovnik, but my vote is for Sorrento unless you move around a little.

Dubrovnik si for everybody!!!
As I used to say, Italy and Croatia are different... especially Dubrovnik and Sorrento... just google them and the photos tell you everything... if you are searching for organized, commercial holiday, go in Italy, if you prefer %26quot;The Mediterranean as it once was%26quot; ...
a little note: if you decide to go in Croatia, you will forget the swimmingpools:-)
as regards shoes????
in Italy - choose AVC, Cezare Paciotti, Brian Cress... - good shoes and good prices
in Croatia - the most original shoes are by Ledenko /ask Sarah Jessica Parker:-)/ and the prices are reasonable
have a good time wherever you decide to go

I would chose dubrovnik by a country mile.

Hi,
I just got back from Dubrovnik and I will share my take on it in a nutshell:
The town: The city is lovely. It%26#39;s an old town contained in an impressive fortress. The shiny and slippery cobblestone roads lead you up and down through a small town steeped in history. (note to girlfriend: wear comfortable shoes, many steps and slippery stone are not heel friendly)
Food: What you will see, at first glance, is that the town is very small and that most of it is comprised of restaurants serving pizza or seafood. There is a fabulous vegetarian restaurant in town, and some of the pizza is amazing, but your choices are limited.
Drawback: Cruiseships drop off their patrons in boatloads and these fill up the town in an overwhelming way. You will notice their group number stickers stuck on the cobblestone.
Beaches: The beach closest to Old Town is nice, but I%26#39;ve been told it gets horrendously crowded in high season. The swimming area is small. Another beach further south is nice as well and more secluded, but as with most beaches in croatia its a pebble beach, so water shoes are a must. (bring these with you, the ones they sell there melt in the sun)
Accomodations: I was told that the Argentina is the most exclusive hotel in Dubrovnik, which I would consider a deterrent. In a metropolitan city I would welcome nothing less, but in Dubrovnik and at your age, I would think it a shame to stay in a golden cage.
Length of stay: 11 days is definitely too long for Dubrovnik alone. Plan some trips to islands, perhaps Hvar or Brac (need to be planned in advance) I also highly recommend booking a kayak tour with Adriatic Kayak Tours. Tamsen is more than helpful and the tours are a great experience.
Shopping: forget about it.
Where ever you choose, you%26#39;ll have a lovely time. Italy or Croatia, no matter, they are both blessed with an abundance of beauty.
She%26#39;s a lucky girl either way.

11 days is too long in Dubrovnic - take him to sorrento for 7 days, and dubrovnic for 4......
|||
I agree with all regarding 11 days as being too long in Dubrovnik. However, Split is often forgotten and is in my opinion very special and upcoming. You can drive there from D along the gorgeous Adriatic coast or take a bus. We stayed at the Argentina in winter and were two of only a few guests in the hotel. I am sure in summer it is filled to capacity but it was a beautiful hotel.
|||
that%26#39;s a great idea - we visited split as well and it was lovelly. Lots to do and boat trips to the islands as well - I would sugest splitting your trup between split and Dubrovik - you can fly straight into split, and get a bus from split to dubrovnik - it takes a long while, but as said, it%26#39;s a beautiful road

Hi Richard
I have been to both Dubrovnik and Sorrento this year and I have to say I loved both.
Both have a great coastline and beautiful scenery, great resturants, nice bars and plent to do.
If I had to pick Dubrovnik would edge it as it is not as commercial as yet but don%26#39;t get me wrong it%26#39;s all geared up for tourists . I just felt no tackiness had hit it yet.
Dubrovnik old town is a wold heritage centre and is something else.
I went to Sorrento on a girls holiday and Dubrovnik with my partner. We had some lovely meals in Dubrovnik and there is a great bar on the outside of the city walls looking out to sea.
We hired a moped and travelled up the cost which was great. You can also take many trips to nearby islands.
I would defo agree that 11 nights would be too much just in Dubrovnik but I would also say that of Sorrento as we spent 3 nights in Rome before 4 night in Sorrento.
I would suggest to get best value for money and greater flexability
not to book a package holiday but do it all yourself booking your own flights and digs.
If you need any more advice send me a mail.
