Gruž harbor or Old Town?

My husband and I will be staying in Dubrovnik for 3 nights and can%26#39;t decide between these two areas. We%26#39;ll be relying on public transport (bus from Split and to airport at end of stay) and we%26#39;ll also be taking a ferry to the island Sipan. We%26#39;d also like to rent a car for a day for a day trip. Other than that we%26#39;ll be happy to walk around town.

Based on this, is one area more convenient for our stay in Dubrovnik?

Thanks!!

Either way would be ok. The last two times we were in Dubrovnik we stayed in the Lapad area and took the bus to the Old Town every time we needed to go there. I would guess that you would be taking the ferry to Sipan from Gruz, so that might be more convenient if you were staying near there. I sure like the thought of staying near the Old Town though.

Thanks, that%26#39;s a very helpful perspective! It seems like Old Town is about 40-min walking distance the the harbor so that%26#39;s completely doable for us.

When I went to Dubrovnik I stayed just outside the old city gates which was great, but if you are going to be using the ferries, then being near the harbour can be a good idea. The bus station and ferry port are next door to each other. It%26#39;s not a terribly nice walk in to the old town from the harbour - I think you would most likely be using the buses, which are cheaper if you buy tickets from the newspaper kiosks not on the bus. We took boat trips from Dubrovnik%26#39;s small harbour near the old arsenal, but these were trips with lunch not just the local ferries which are obviously lots cheaper.

If it is important that you catch buses or boats at particular times I would stay nearer the port.
