Hi everyone,
I will be travelling to Croatia in August (I know, not the best time, but it%26#39;s out of our control.)
Our proposed itinerary is as follows (Hvar and Dubrovnik are the two places we really want to see. We have 6 nights). Would you guys mind telling me how this sounds?
Day 1: arrive Dubrovnik early. Overnight in Dubrovnik.
Day 2: Dubrovnik.
Day 3: Day trip to Montengro with rental car, overnight in in Dubrovnik
Day 4: Depart early, scenic drive to Split. Drop off car, ferry to Hvar, spend night.
Day 5: Hvar
Day 6: Pick up car in Split, drive back to Dubrovnik, side trip to Mostar if time. Overnight in Dubrovnik.
Day 7: Depart.
We are avoiding taking the car ferry because I understand it is much more difficult to secure a place - especially in August.
Finally, do you recommend using a travel agent to book everything (cars, ferries, etc), or is this something we can handle on our own from here?
Thanks so much.

Sorry for the double post - not sure why that happened.

First of all I think that you can handle everything on your own in terms of arrangements. I don%26#39;t think its a bad idea to use the ferries and you would not be able to book that quick ferry ahead of time anyways. You would just get in line at the port, buy your ticket and drive on the ferry. I also think that you could just keep your car in going to Hvar instead of renting again when you get back to Split. I wouldn%26#39;t want to deal with that hassle.
About the itnerary--- have you looked into flying into Split? Then you wouldn%26#39;t have to backtrack. You could just fly in, get to Hvar and then work your way down the coast, maybe even stopping in Mostar on your way to Dubrovnik. If you need to keep it the way you have it, its ok too.

I have to disagree with Barry - first time for everything!
Car on Hvar in August is something you DON%26#39;T want to deal with! The Italian invasion, %26quot;millions%26quot; of tourists, poor parking, narrow streets and roads...
The best way would be to leave the car in Split and then use scooters or rent inexpensive convertibles while in Hvar. My agents took care of all the details for me and we left the car in Split harbor, picked it up when we came back and there was a concierge to handle our tickets and to show us around. Even though I know the harbor well, I was with a group of business partners and I wanted them to see how that operates. It was flawless!
But I do agree with Barry that flying into Split and out of Dubrovnik would make a difference and would be much better solution.

My question would be whether you need the car for Dubrovnik to Split - it is a great scenic drive but a single road lane on each side and busy. Thus, there is often pressure on slower drivers from trucks and buses. The buses are very good, air conditioned and fast (4 hours approx). The boat is also great to use but takes all day (9.30 am to 6 pm) although you get to stop off at Korcula. At both Split and Dubrovnik the bus stations and ferry ports are adjacent to each other.

Thanks everyone - we were worrried about the car because of the time of year as well. If we were going off season, we would definitely take the car ferry.
But another good point is - do we really need the car for the trip from Dub to Split? The only reason why we were going to do that was because we really like travelling on our own, stopping to see things along the way. But since we are driving back (unfortuantely flying into Split and out of Dub or vice cersa is way more expensive) we could do that on the way home... I think a solution may have been found!
