I am planning a trip for my family for the summer and could use some advice. My plan is to fly into Ljubljana, stay for a few days and then take a rental car from there to the coast and drive down to Koper, Piran, then on to Rovinj and Pula and then back to Ljubljana. I%26#39;m trying to find out how easy it is to rent a car and travel between the two countries and whether or not border crossings are long or problematic. From the sound of it we will probably focus on Rovinj and make trips from there in the car if possible.

Hi there,
Im planning something similar to this this year also, only i think we%26#39;re aiming to drive a bit further down the croatian coast.
Im sure someone will give you some solid advice on rental companies etc but after looking through the forum threads it seems relatively staright forward driving from Slovenia to Croatia. However, I definitely remember reading you should fill up with petrol in slovenia as its cheaper!
Rovinj looks beautiful. I had a recommendation for accommodation there from someone that i will dig out and forward to you if you like.
Good luck and i hope it all goes well!

Driving is easy. Rentals will allow you to drive your car into Croatia but be sure to mention it when renting one; it usually means some extra insurance fee you have to pay. If you want to avoid it, get to Rovinj by public transport and rent a car there, here’s one post recommending one renter:

As for border crossing, try to avoid weekends (Saturday%26#39;s), that%26#39;s when the queues are long.
Exploring Istria peninsula with a car is a great idea, inland Istria is not so touristic, more rural and authentic; plus it is all within an hour and a half from Rovinj.
Here%26#39;s a good site to start planning
